About
I've spent my career at the intersection of commercial success and genuine impact, first in consulting, and then building sustainability from the inside.
Most recently, I built the sustainability function for Liberty Mutual's Global Risk Solutions business. It enabled the business, particularly underwriting and risk, to use sustainability and climate insight in day-to-day decisions, not just report on it after the fact. Before that, I led ERM's Corporate Sustainability Services practice for Northern Europe as Partner, growing the practice significantly and integrating the SustainAbility team into ERM. Earlier still, at SustainAbility itself, I advised major multinational organisations across energy, healthcare, consumer goods and heavy industry on sustainability strategy and governance.
That combination of building from inside an organisation, and advising from outside it, has shaped how I work. I've learned that most sustainability strategies aren't short on ambition. They're short on the unglamorous machinery that makes ambition survive contact with a board, a regulator or a P&L.
My perspective has also been shaped by working across some 20 countries, including supporting refugee communities in Latin America and charitable work on disaster risk reduction in India. I also contributed to international thought leadership, including through UNEP's Global Environment Outlook, where I was lead author of Adapt to Survive. These experiences taught me that the biggest challenges, be it climate resilience or sustainable development, rarely respect organisational or sectoral boundaries.
Today, through Denise Delaney Consulting, I advise organisations navigating sustainability, climate and governance challenges as a strategic adviser, in fractional leadership roles, or both. I particularly enjoy the places where different priorities meet: commercial and societal, regulation and opportunity, immediate decisions and long-term resilience. What draws me to this work hasn't changed since the start of my career: helping organisations translate ambition into something that gets done, and done well — delivery that holds up, and impact that's real.
Clients and employers have included global insurers, multinational companies, investors, development organisations and non-profit organisations.
I have worked with organisations across:
• Financial Services
• Insurance
• Investment and Private Capital
• Infrastructure
• Energy
• Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals
• Consumer Goods
• International Development
Approach
There is a wealth of sustainability frameworks, regulations and reporting requirements.
What organisations often need is something different. Trusted advice. Practical judgement. Someone who can connect strategy with delivery.
I believe the most effective sustainability strategies are those that become part of how an organisation makes decisions: not an additional process sitting alongside the business.
That means listening carefully, understanding context and helping leaders identify where sustainability can genuinely strengthen resilience, create value and contribute to society.
